Nitrous Oxide
Laughing Gas
Nitrous Oxide, also called laughing gas, is a sweet-smelling, non-irritating, colorless gas which you can breathe. Nitrous Oxide has been the primary means of sedation in dentistry for many years. Nitrous oxide is safe, with the patient receiving 50-70% oxygen with no less than 30% nitrous oxide. The patient is able to breathe on their own and remain in control of all bodily functions. Some patients experience mild amnesia and may fall asleep, not remembering all of what happened during their appointment.
Advantages of Using Nitrous Oxide
- The depth of sedation can be altered at any time to increase or decrease sedation.
- There is no after effect such as a “hangover”.
- Inhalation sedation is safe with no side effects on your heart and lungs, etc.
- Inhalation sedation is very effective in minimizing gagging.
- It works rapidly, as it reaches the brain within 20 seconds. In as little as 2-3 minutes, its relaxation and pain-relieving properties develop.
Reasons to Not Use Nitrous Oxide
You should not utilize Nitrous Oxide if you have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Though there are no other major contraindications to using nitrous oxide, you may not want to use it if you have emphysema, exotic chest problems, M.S., a cold or other difficulties with breathing.
You may want to ask your dentist for a “5 minute trial” to see how you feel with this type of sedation method before proceeding.
Nitrous Oxide FAQs
What is nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild sedative used in dentistry to help patients feel relaxed and comfortable during dental procedures. It is administered through a small mask placed over the nose and can help ease anxiety while allowing you to remain awake and responsive.
Is nitrous oxide safe?
Nitrous oxide is considered safe for most patients when administered and monitored by a trained dental professional. Your dentist will review your medical history and determine whether nitrous oxide is an appropriate option for you.
Will I be awake during treatment with nitrous oxide?
Yes. Nitrous oxide helps you feel calm and relaxed while remaining conscious and able to communicate with your dentist. You can respond to instructions throughout the procedure, and the level of sedation can be adjusted as needed.
How quickly does nitrous oxide work?
Nitrous oxide typically begins working within a few minutes of inhalation. Once your dental procedure is complete, the gas is discontinued and oxygen is administered to help clear it from your system. Most patients recover quickly and can return to their normal activities shortly afterward.
Does nitrous oxide have any side effects?
Some patients may experience mild side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, or lightheadedness. These effects are generally temporary. Let your dentist know about your medical history, medications, and any concerns before receiving nitrous oxide.
Can anyone receive nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide is suitable for many dental patients, but it may not be appropriate for everyone. Certain medical conditions, pregnancy considerations, respiratory issues, and other factors may affect whether it is recommended. Your dentist will evaluate your individual needs and medical history before treatment.
Does dental insurance cover nitrous oxide?
Coverage for nitrous oxide varies by dental insurance plan and the type of procedure being performed. Some plans may cover sedation when it is considered necessary, while others may classify it as an additional service. Contact your insurance provider or dental office to confirm your coverage before your appointment.
